As of December 1st, 2025, Alice has been suspended by The University of Alabama in accordance with Attorney General Pam Bondi’s memorandum where she outlined guidance for recipients of federal funding. In her memorandum, she describes “unlawful proxy discrimination,” a practice in which “neutral criteria…that function as proxies for protected characteristics violate federal law if designed or applied with the intention of advantaging or disadvantaging individuals based on protected characteristics.” The University of Alabama has interpreted this guideline to mean that both Alice and Nineteen Fifty-Six are unlawful proxies and have thus decided to suspend both publications.

The Alice team is incredibly disappointed at the suspension of such important publications. Alice has always been a space for everyone and has never excluded anyone based on their identity. We pride ourselves on fostering an inclusive environment where all creative voices can flourish.

To everyone who has been part of Alice over the past decade, thank you. We have created a magazine that will continue to live on in all of our hearts.

Our work will be preserved on our website, and our latest issue Resilience has been uploaded. Continue to spread the message that Resilience shared. Please reach out with any questions.

In solidarity,

Gabrielle Gunter, Editor-in-Chief
