2024 VMAs: Hits and Misses
Dani Rouseau
The 2024 Video Music Awards were full of both fashion hits and misses as artists raced to the red carpet. Lil Nas X certainly kicked up dust with a futuristic race car driver look, complete with matching hot pink helmet and cropped leather jacket. Teddy Swims was similarly impressive in an all-white silhouette with black and red accents—including an eye-catching set of cherry-red nails. Other male attendees dressed to impress, including Mikey Angelo and Joe Floww, who opted for bedazzled and asymmetrical looks, respectively.
Unfortunately, many male guests failed to step out in something beyond some variation of the dreaded black suit (*ahem* Quavo and Shawn Mendes), or they just missed the mark. Sorry, Benson Boone, but everyone can see right through you and your sheer shirt. Unexciting though those looks may have been, at the very least, they looked award-show ready. Can someone ask The Kid Laroi and his stylists exactly what went through their minds when they sent him to the VMAs dressed as a cross between a high school math teacher and one of his students? And Tyler Posey…left much to be desire.
Now that business, let us discuss the women’s looks— people are not alone in thinking that the spotlight was on them the entire time. Though stunning looks were abundant, and a special few shone especially bright. Chappell Roan commanded the carpet in a beautifully flowy gown, accessorized with razor-sharp nails and a sword—to remind us that she is not to be messed with. LISA looked angelic in a cream-colored corset and dress, while Camila Cabello turned out a sultrier black look. Not to be overlooked was Coco Jones, who looked ethereal in a smokey gray dress. Muni Long’s raspberry ensemble left a pleasant taste in the mouth, as well. Of course, the cast of season sixteen of RuPaul’s Drag Race, who were so kind as to tone down their fashion sense and style just enough to give the other girls a chance must be mentioned. Morphine Love Dion, in particular, deserves a special shout-out for rising beautifully from the wreckage of a fatal car accident to stun on the red carpet.
